Happy New Year!

Originally composed Sat, 01 Jan 2005 02:46:18 MST.

I'm not big on celebrating the new year. Once I was in Phuket in Thailand, for the Y2K switch in fact, and another time I was in Manhattan with my friend, Thuc, back in 1996 I think it was. Both of those were fun times, but that it was the beginning of a new year had little to do with it. Maybe there's something wrong if I can't even draw some excitement out of tossing out a whole calendar and putting up a new one. Truth be told, I don't really get into Halloween or Easter or any of the traditional holidays. But since I have this blog (what there is of it, here are my new year resolutions...

Resolutions for 2005

  • Go to the gym more, eat less. I actually already eat less, but that cruise was a killer. I used to go to the gym twice each day, when I lived across the street from one, and I'd like to return to that schedule.
  • Implement my HIS project management tools. Even though nobody is really excited about that whole concept, I'd like to know if it would be useful, and it's a good application exercise.
  • Make this blog software work. Right now it sorta works, but the various events of November and December (holidays, cruise, other things that were not so pleasant) have left me far, far, far behind where I wanted to be. The postgresql database part works just fine, so it's the code that assembles the database query results into output that needs my attention.
  • Make AZOpinions go somewhere. My interest in current events is increasing, and my desire to interact with others and their opinions prompted me to start a slashdot-like website called AZOpinions, but that's about as far as I've gotten thus far. The software for this site will be used there, hence the delay compounds.
  • Be more creative. I've been lax for a few months and it kills me. I worked at three different places in various capacities, and the end result (aside from putting some money in the bank... not much, though) is that I now am quite certain that the silicon valley days are a distant memory. Inspiration for creativity and accomplishment will have to come from within.
  • Drive less. My Diesel Jetta is a fine automobile (though VW has dropped the ball in terms of body tolerances) and getting 50mpg give or take is a great feeling, especially now that Diesel is back down near $2.00 (I miss the days of $1.50 or less, though). I drive it too much. Walking would be better for short trips.
  • Get out more. I spend too much time in front of my computer, and it ends up being time spent reading about current events, politics, slashdot, fark, metafilter, etc etc etc. Reading is a great thing, but it seems to replace real productivity. I need to replace some of that time with some sunlight and fresh air if I'm going to be avoiding work.
  • Start more businesses. ReallyCool Consulting, LLC is in a sapling state at the moment, which makes this is a great time to get other irons in the fire. I wouldn't mind doing something that involves interacting with people a bit more, though I would rather not be doing someething that depends on that interaction. If you know what I mean.
  • Add content to the web. This blog is supposed to enable that, as are the other site ideas I have, AZO being one of a few. I have an empty Flickr account as well, to which I shall add the cruise photos and some other pics to at least make them available.
  • Learn more about WSDL, UDDI, various xml bits, and the basic XML-RPC/SOAP/REST/etc world, and get down with RSS, ATOM, and Trackbacks. Also, become more proficient with python, and maybe pick up some java. One of the ideas for which I just registered a domain name will require heavy use of web services (SOAP and REST at least), so this would be a good thing to be more proficient in.
  • Try to be more concise. I figured I'd end with an impossible bullet item. Verbosity is my tendency when I write, and that's just the way it is. I think I've cut down on the amount of talking I do, though, possibly because I work from home a lot.

So there you go. I've put those out there, so now I can refer back to them at any time and see if I've made any progress. Maybe I'll comment on that along the way. I would bet a dollar on that.
